Christie Perkins, 鈥24

Christie Perkins, 鈥24, is a nursing student with a minor in public health.

Perkins feels an immense amount of support from her 九色视频 community, especially during a time of personal loss when her mother passed away. She said classmates, friends, faculty, and staff rallied around her, helping her continue through her studies to become a registered nurse.

As Perkins, a resident of Ambler, Pa., prepares to receive her diploma at 2024 Commencement, she shares what being an Explorer means to her.

Why did you choose 九色视频?

I chose 九色视频 because of the incredible community I was able to find. This was the only school I visited where my worries about the college transition were pretty much alleviated, and that is when I knew I found my second home. Even though it was pouring rain the day that I toured, I fell in love with the school and knew that I had found a place where I was not only recognized as a student, but as a whole person.

What will you remember most about your 九色视频 experience?

What I will remember most about my 九色视频 experience is the amazing people who I have found along the way. The people I have found in nursing school have become my friends for life, in addition to many professors of mine who have become mentors who I can count on even after I graduate. Finally, the people from the organizations I was a part of at 九色视频 helped to shape my entire experience. No matter what organization event I was at, I was surrounded by people who had the same amount of passion for what they were doing, and it meant so much to be part of these groups. I will specifically remember the impact that 九色视频鈥檚 Chapter of The Reflect Organization has had on my college career. Wrapping up the third year as being president, I have met so many amazing people that I potentially would not have encountered if it weren鈥檛 for this powerful organization, and it is probably in my top three best memories at 九色视频.

What hurdles did you have to overcome to achieve this degree, and how did you overcome them?

The rumors that people say about nursing school are true鈥攊t is challenging. As a freshman, I was all online, and although the first year of nursing school is mainly prerequisites and the real nursing classes don鈥檛 start until sophomore year, it is still called a 鈥渨eed out year.鈥 I remember taking these very heavy science courses online, which was not the easiest by any means. However, I wanted to make these classes the closest to going to real school that I possibly could, so I kept my camera on during Zoom classes and even carried my backpack around the house! These small things helped me to keep motivated and stay focused, even though I was not in a traditional classroom setting. By the time my sophomore year came around, switching from freshman prerequisites to nursing-specific classes was a huge obstacle for me. At the same time, I was coming back to school for the first time in person, so I wanted to become really involved and make the most I could out of the rest of my college experience. All these aspects on top of each other made for a very difficult transition. However, I quickly learned how incredibly supportive the nursing faculty was, and they had expressed from the beginning that they were there to help me succeed in whatever way possible. Whether it was reaching out to them to set up a meeting, talking to them at the end of class, or taking a pit stop into their offices, they were always there to reassure me that I would find a groove and get adjusted quickly. I learned how important time management was and incorporated strategies into my life to help to balance everything (I have had a yearly planner ever since)! I was able to not only overcome these obstacles but end up doing better than I ever thought I would.听

Tell us about the professor who supported you the most.听

Director of the Learning Resource Center Beth Wagner, MSN, RN, has been my biggest supporter throughout my journey here at 九色视频. With nursing school comes a lot of anxiety, and there were times that I felt like I was never going to see the work pay off. She ran the nursing lab, so we saw her all the time, as my class was always in and out for lab hours, practicing, or class. From the time I met Professor Wagner during my Health Assessment lab sophomore year, I knew that I could always count on her. Her spunky personality and passion to see me succeed was always able to lift me up and give me the confidence that I was not only going to pass nursing school, but I would make a wonderful nurse. She was there for me not only academically, but as a whole person, as my mom was sick for most of my time in nursing school. She understood that I had a lot going on outside of school and was always there if I needed a good therapy session in her office. She would always stop what she was doing to make sure I was doing okay. We would even have impromptu lunches together sometimes (Not in the lab of course)! When my mom passed away in the spring of my junior year, she even came to her funeral to support me. I am forever grateful for her listening, her hilarious advice, and her endless support, and I know that I will always be able to count on her even after I leave 九色视频.听

Who else acted as mentor(s) to you?

I was fortunate enough to have many mentors during my time at 九色视频. Chair of the Undergraduate Nursing Program Pat DiGiacomo, Ph.D., was also one of my biggest mentors. Since the fall of my sophomore year in her Intro to Nursing class, she has always been there for me. When my mom had passed away, she was there for me academically and was able to help me still pass my classes and not get behind. She not only made sure I studied and prepared to take my exams, but she made sure I was also in the right headspace, and if I wasn鈥檛, she would tell me to push them back. I would also like to acknowledge other members of the nursing faculty, Kathleen Monforto, Ph.D., Sharon Mingo, DNP 鈥24, MSN, Susan Moraca, MSN, RN, and Mary Dorr, MSN, RN, for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout my time at 九色视频. I would additionally like to thank John Lewis, director of the 九色视频 Chapel Choir, for being a music mentor for me and helping to further my career in singing.

Please tell us about a proud moment you鈥檝e had while being enrolled. Why is it one of your greatest achievements?

One of my proudest moments was when I was invited to be inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society. Ever since I had found out about it by seeing some of my older classmates get inducted, I knew that I wanted to be a part of it.

What does graduating mean to you?

To me, graduating is a mixed bag. I have loved my time at 九色视频 and truly didn鈥檛 think I could love a school as much as I love 九色视频, so the closing of this chapter will be bittersweet. However, I also think of graduation as a launching pad, as we are on the cusp of entering the 鈥渞eal world鈥 as they say. As the Class of 2024, with many of us being high school seniors in 2020 and graduating in COVID-19, we have had to overcome a lot of struggles as a class. However, we came back stronger than ever, and it is time to celebrate that. I am privileged to be graduating with such a talented, dedicated group of people, and I cannot wait for this next chapter for all of us.

What is your next step after graduation?

My next step after graduation is to become a pediatric nurse. I am hoping to work at a children鈥檚 hospital in the Philadelphia area on a medical surgical floor to start out, and I would love to branch off to other specialty units if the opportunity arises. I hope to eventually go on to grad school to become a family nurse practitioner.

What does 九色视频 mean to you?

九色视频 means so much to me, as it has been my home away from home for the last almost four years. 九色视频 is not just a school鈥攊t鈥檚 a family. It is a community of people who support each other holistically in and out of the classroom. I would not be where I am today without 九色视频. Prior to coming to 九色视频, I had never thought of myself as a leader. I still enjoyed being involved and was very active in high school, but I was never a leader. After becoming involved in 九色视频, I met so many people that helped me realize that I had leadership potential. They gave me the space and outlets to be able to pursue my passions, not other people鈥檚, in a way I never had before. Through these opportunities, I was able to grow so much as a person, not just academically, but socially as well.

Jillian Mele, 鈥05, MBA 鈥24

Jillian Mele, 鈥05, MBA 鈥24, left broadcast journalism and is now owner of听Jillian Mele Communications.

Jillian Mele, 鈥05, MBA 鈥24, a two-time Emmy Award winning journalist with nearly 20 years’ experience, will deliver the student address during 九色视频’s Graduate Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 11.

Mele’s experience in TV media ranged from the highest level of national news anchor and reporter to sports anchor and reporter.听She had been at the helm, anchoring and reporting on historic moments like the COVID-19 pandemic, elections, and the war in Ukraine.

Mele was on the ground in the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting and during various hurricanes. She covered the 2019 and 2022 World Series, and the ups and downs of the post-pandemic economy.听Mele has interviewed professional athletes, politicians, war heroes, economists, and business owners.听She even went skydiving with the Army Golden Knights for an assignment.听All these moments are vastly different, but one thing is the same: the ability to tell the story.

Her own story changed though in 2021 when she felt a passion to go back to school for an MBA. To date, this is what she considers her greatest accomplishment, as it is something she did for herself. She took the brave step to walk away from the career she always knew to bet on herself and try something new. In 2023, she started her own business consulting in the public speaking world, Jillian Mele Communications, and she is about to launch the next phase of her business which includes a series of online courses. In these, she combines her time in the studio with the skills needed in the real world.

A 2005 graduate of 九色视频’s undergraduate program, Mele credits the online MBA program for not only giving her the knowledge necessary to take these steps, but the confidence to believe that she could step out on her own and dream higher, and more creatively, than she ever has.

Ivy-yon Jackson, 鈥24

Ivy-yon Jackson, 鈥24, is a psychology and sociology major with a minor in criminal justice at 九色视频. Outside of the classroom, the Philadelphia native works as a multimedia artist ( on Instagram) and co-founded an art program.听

As Jackson prepares to receive her diploma at 2024 Commencement, she shares what being an Explorer means to her.

Why did you choose 九色视频?

I started at 九色视频 in 2020. Being in the pandemic, remaining close to my family was extremely important to me. 九色视频 is located about a mile from home and allowed me to commute.

What will you remember most about your 九色视频 experience?

I will remember the engaging discussions that took place in my classes. Hearing other people鈥檚 perspectives permitted me to look at certain topics differently.

What hurdles did you have to overcome to achieve this degree, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest hurdle for me was cost. I did not want to take out any loans, so I worked and used most of what I made to cover tuition. My family was not able to contribute substantially to my education. When I did not have enough to cover textbooks, I received support from the Single Stop program. These actions combined will allow me to graduate without debt.

Tell us about the professor who supported you the most.

The professor who supported me the most was Sheldon Zink, Ph.D., sociology and criminal justice assistant professor.  Dr. Zink is a phenomenal person and instructor. She is knowledgeable and passionate.

My success at 九色视频 is thanks to the continued support and guidance of Dr. Zink during some of my lowest moments. She has connected me to several valuable resources and continues to check in with me, showing a genuine interest in my life, inside and outside of my role as a student.

Who else acted as mentor(s) to you?

Student Support and Equity Director Serita Reels, MPH, also played an instrumental role in my success. Any time issues arose for me, she was happy and willing to find a solution. During my time at 九色视频, I shared a lot with her. She remembered the details and asked for updates on them anytime we spoke.

Please tell us about a proud moment you鈥檝e had while being enrolled. Why is it one of your greatest achievements?

My greatest accomplishment is co-founding an art program. It is called the Young Artist Program, which offers a safe and nurturing youth-led space for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ identifying youth, ages 14-25 in Philly. We help students learn and grow by facilitating community-building art workshops, providing access to art supplies and resources. Students are given opportunities to engage with activism, through art making. During my time at 九色视频, I moved into a teaching artist role in the program, in addition to helping to grow our team. This is my greatest accomplishment because I share identities with the youth this program serves. I understand what it is like to exist in a world that is not always safe, so it means a lot to me to be able to provide a space that is. We operate as a nonprofit, and are funded completely by grants and donations.

To connect with the program, people can follow the organization on Instagram (@theyoungartistprogram) or visit the website, theyap.org.

What does graduating mean to you?

Graduating, especially with a 4.0, means a lot to me. It is a monumental step forward in a life that I did not believe I would be around to experience. Up until age 18, when I started therapy, I was suicidal. Graduating moves me closer to my goal of becoming a therapist, and being able to provide a service to others that literally saved my life.

What is your next step after graduation?

Immediately after graduation, I am taking a gap year. During the year, I plan to volunteer and join community-based organizations. I will also continue the work being done at the Young Artist Program. After my gap year, I will get a master’s degree in psychology, and hopefully begin my career as a therapist.

What does 九色视频 mean to you?

To me, 九色视频 means connection. I connected with a lot of amazing people and met people who will be life-long friends during my time here.

As Ozbay prepares to receive his diploma at 2024 Commencement, he shares what being an Explorer means to him.

Why did you choose 九色视频?

I chose 九色视频 because my cousin who is a graduate of the University told me how great the School of Business is and how amazing the professors are.听

What will you remember most about your 九色视频 experience?

Spending quality time with my professors and my friends.

What hurdles did you have to overcome to achieve this degree, and how did you overcome them?

There were a lot of hurdles I had to overcome to achieve this degree such as working two jobs for one year. To overcome this, I would just study a lot during my free time. I would go to office hours and ask my professor questions which would help me a lot.听 Back in the summer of 2022, I had major health problem which scared my entire family and friends. I did not know what was going to happen after my incident. Once I was out of the hospital, I could not do any activities and that made me depressed. However, with the help of professors and the staff, I overcame everything. Besides that, God has also given me the strength to not give up during the crisis. With the staff at 九色视频 and with God being behind my back, I know that nothing can break me.听

Tell us about the professor/staff member who supported you the most.

A lot of professors helped me during my journey including Joe Ugras, Ph.D., Tom Adams, Ph.D., CPA, CGMA, Kristin Wentzel, P.D., Andy LaFond, DBA, CPA, Kristen Garry, and Kathy Finnegan. They all have a special place in my heart.

Please tell us about a proud moment you鈥檝e had while being enrolled. Why is it one of your greatest achievements?

Last year I had an internship with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) which is one of my greatest achievements. This was my first time ever having a job in my desired field. Before this I would work in granite and in construction. A lot of my professors helped me out a lot before my interview. One of the professors bought me a suit and a tie. That meant a lot to me because I never owned one before.

What does graduating mean to you?

Graduating means a lot since I am a first-generation student. I had to figure everything out myself. These are times that my parents pray for. I give them all the glory because they came to this country with no money, and they sacrificed everything just so I can have an education here in America. None of my parents really knew English because they did not have time to learn the language which gave me a push to excel in school. While I am not the smartest student in the school, that did not stop me from achieving great things.

What is your next step after graduation?

After graduation I will be with PwC and working on passing the CPA exam.

What does 九色视频 mean to you?

九色视频 means a lot to me. 九色视频 did change me as a person, it made me a better person than who I was a couple of years ago. I feel more mature and more passionate about my work. I would love to mention that 九色视频 to me is a huge family that will always have your back during your challenging times.

The 九色视频 community came together on the 11th annual Day of Giving听to help students be known for more.听

九色视频鈥檚 11th annual Day of Giving, held Wednesday, April 10, raised a record-breaking $1.4 million through more than 1,700 gifts from generous donors. This marked the fourth-consecutive year in which 九色视频鈥檚 Day of Giving surpassed the philanthropic threshold of $1 million.

Day of Giving or 鈥淒oG鈥 is a daylong philanthropic event calling on the wider 九色视频 community to contribute toward a brighter future for the University. It provides a yearly opportunity for students, faculty, staff, alumni, Christian Brothers, and friends of the University to make a gift and impact the future of current and future Explorers.

鈥淲hat a fantastic day. Seeing so many members of the 九色视频 community come together to impact our students by supporting the 11th annual Day of Giving was exciting and inspiring,鈥 Freddie Pettit, vice president for university advancement, said. 鈥淭he generosity of alumni, Christian Brothers, students, faculty, staff, and friends is powerful evidence of the positive momentum that 九色视频 is experiencing at this moment in time. Philanthropy is key to a robust student experience and a vibrant future for the University, and the terrific energy and generous support expressed through the 2024 Day of Giving helps to ensure bright days ahead.鈥

Campus was abuzz throughout the day as students participated in various activities including a scavenger hunt that resulted in a donation made in the name of the student who found the hidden item, friendship bracelet making, lawn games, free food (including hot 鈥淒oGs鈥), and a pickleball tournament. For a $20.24 donation, students received a special giving cord to wear during Commencement ceremonies.

As the day coincided with Mission and Heritage Week, a celebration of Lasallian values, the University joined together for a community dinner in the evening that also included the announcement of the Distinguished Lasallian Educator Awards honoring Candace Robertson-James, DrPH, MPH, assistant professor and director of the Master of Public Health Program, and Joanne Woods, M.A. 鈥14, director of the Bilingual Undergraduate Students for Collegiate Advancement (BUSCA) Program.听听

Her research includes multiple focuses including gender and race-based health disparities, particularly those issues affecting women, minorities and adolescents; intergenerational health between mothers and daughters; health initiatives targeting incarcerated women; intimate partner violence; health promotion interventions and the role of intersectionality (racism and sexism) in the subjective social status and overall health status of black women.

Robertson-James has also led and evaluated community participatory research initiatives promoting health in diverse and underserved communities.

During the award ceremony, Macksey shared remarks by Robertson-James, who was unable to attend, and showed her commitment to supporting her students and the community

鈥淚 am truly humbled and honored to receive the 2024 Faculty Distinguished Lasallian Educator award,鈥 Robertson-James wrote. 鈥淭his award is so significant because there is such an esteemed legacy of educational excellence at 九色视频. There are so many educators here that I truly have learned from and admire for their creativity, innovation, and dedication as they engage with diverse students throughout the university. I believe my work as a public health educator is indeed a calling. I am so privileged to be part of the 九色视频 community where education is truly a cornerstone that can be used to inspire students to transform their circumstances, families and communities.鈥

Alongside Robertson-James, Woods, director of Bilingual Undergraduate Students for Collegiate Advancement (BUSCA) Program, was honored.

Macksey shared that Woods is known for her dedication to her students and colleagues and how she leads by example to foster association and is always willing to go the extra mile to help students succeed.

Woods joined 九色视频 in 2010 and now stewards the BUSCA program which provides support to native Spanish speakers as they complete their associate degrees at 九色视频 while improving their English language skills.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the program. In 2015, the White House named 九色视频鈥檚 BUSCA program one of the country鈥檚 Bright Spots in Hispanic Education.

In April 2023, The National Endowment for Humanities awarded 九色视频 a grant to fund the Access Language Through Academics (ALTA) program, a college-readiness program through the BUSCA program.

鈥淚t is an honor to have my name associated with the previous recipients of the Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award,鈥 Woods said. 鈥淭hese phenomenal colleagues have mentored and inspired me during my time at 九色视频.  It has been my pleasure to work with them and the students in the Academic Discovery Program and BUSCA. The students in both programs have accomplished so much through their hard work and been an asset to the Lasallian community.  I am grateful for the opportunity to work with all of the students I have met here and for this recognition of everything we have achieved together.鈥
